If you get bored or need a change from the usual rainy day stuff like reading, watching a movie, working on your hobby or playing Spider Solitaire on you computer, no computers allowed!

  2. Take a field trip to a local gallery, museum or arboretum.
  3. Practice dancing, any kind, unless it’s your usual.
  4. If you’re not alone, see if others will join you in a card or board game.

  7. Read through your recipe books to find interesting info you didn’t know before.
  8. Work on a word search or crossword puzzle.
  9. Sit by a window, or somewhere out of the rain, and look and listen to the nature around you.
  10. Hand write anything. A letter to a friend, thank you note, letter to the editor or start a novel!
  11. Call someone on a regular telephone, if you still have one.
  12. Take a long bubble bath, till you prune!
  13. Treat someone that needs or deserves it to a nice lunch.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Starting Your Intricate Herb Garden

PoGirlGardens2

With too many herbs to mention by name, where you live determines what and when to plant.  When I was first gardening, I learned the hard way not to assume we were warming up early just because we had an early warm up.  Living in southern Michigan, I plant my cool weather or hardy plants mid-April and the warm weather stuff by Memorial weekend, or end of May sometime.  Check for your area on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map and prevent frost damage to tender seedlings. As long as your soil is enriched and aerated, all you need to worry about are the three W’s, Watering, Weeding and Watching for pests and your garden should be a success. My most successful gardens were dug by hand in clay soil.  I worked in some peat and manure and that was it, besides watering and organically killing any pest, usually by hand.  Because it was near the country, all the bigger varmints killed the little ones so no varmint damage like I have experienced trying to garden in the city.

You need to decide by choice or convenience if you prefer to purchase young plants or start them by seed.  Some seeds you can just toss in the garden soil and some you will want to start indoors and harden off before planting outdoors.  You might try experimenting depending on the type and size of the herb.  Know the size and the needs of all plants so you can better design where you wish to place them in your garden.  Find out which ones are annuals or perennials so you aren’t surprised when come back the next year with a vengeance!  I’ve had spearmint go wild on me, much to my neighbor’s chagrin, and had to weed it back to keep it on my side of the fence.  I would have loved the free spearmint if it were the other way around, but some city folks want their perfect little lawns. You can find a treasure trove of plant and garden information on the various Cooperative Extension Service sites offered by local colleges online now.  Below is a sample page from the book “Vegetable Gardening Know-How” in the herb section to give you some idea.  The author took it from the Cooperative Extension Service of Kansas State University.  The book was published in 1975, FYI. img890 Get to know your herbs.  Currently I only grow those I intend to use for cooking.  I used to grow lavender to give to others that loved it.  I had an allergy with this plant so I finally stopped, as beautiful as it is.  You can decide to grow a little around your yard, planting some in between your other garden plants or actually design a beautiful garden  that you designate for herbs only.  Be sure to lay out your design on paper first, keeping in mind the size and needs of each plant so you don’t end up crowding or shading some.  Don’t plant herbs requiring rich soil right next to those needing dryer soil or shade loving plants next to those needing full sun.  Be aware of these things and you should be OK, providing you don’t over water your garden.  Some starting out actually kill their plants with kindness by over feeding and too much watering because they are afraid the least sign of dry soil means certain death for the plant.  Most need to dry a little between rainfall or watering.  You’ll get the hang of it once you start.  Try to use containers to trap rain if you can.  Some have gone back to actual rain barrels which are great!  WARNING!  Check to be sure you are not breaking the law locally if you do this.  Yes, I am being serious!  In some states, like Colorado, it is illegal to gather rain for gardens even though it saves water in the long run.  It has to do with some petty “you own your home but don’t have water rights.”  First place, I would take that all the way to the Supreme Court if I had to for the simple reason is rain is not water.  It’s rain and can be proven so if facts are presented.  If any area of our government in America becomes that petty and controlling, it needs to be stopped and to do this, you must not obey it and fight it.  That’s the only way we have managed any freedoms in this world at all.

I hope you enjoy the intricacies of these various herbs.

Organic Gardening and Global Warming

There is definitely something causing problems with the earth and most of this is from man’s industrialization and pollution of air, land and water.  We only have one earth and even though yesterday was officially Earth Day, every day should be earth day!

It’s very important that we all be part of the solution instead of the problem and try to consciously refrain from the use of products that harm the environment even if you may have to work a little harder to achieve similar results, like weeding, for instance.  You can click on my Green Gardens page for more organic gardening tips.

We had a speaker at my elementary school back in the 1960’s that spoke of all the pollution that was being done at that time and I can only imagine that we are headed towards a point of no return to ever saving this planet one day very soon.

When our bees are gone, so are we.

Even more important than problems with our environment are the problems with the hearts and souls of mankind. There was a reason that religious teachings were so important to any civilized society and we are now finding out why. Even a poorly trained dog is hard to handle but a man who is not told the truth may lose his own soul. I made this video years ago when all the talk of global warming started because I thought there was really more important problems that man faced at this time.

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Early Bird Makes the Muffin

Sometimes mildly bi-polar is not so bad.  I’ve never been officially diagnosed as such but it runs in my family and my Doctor recently told me that it’s possible I may be “mildly” bi-polar because I’m a creative type and very sensitive.  I’ve always been able to function normally, sort of, so this comment did not surprise me in any way.  Not sure why all the labels they insist on giving everyone, but on to the challenge and that is I made blueberry muffins early this morning.  Someone gave me a whole slew of frozen blueberries last week and I’m not going to let the go to waste!  Besides, I have to make way in the freezer for ice cream cause summer’s comin’ fast!  Thank God!

Sometimes it appears I become obsessive when taking photographs of various subjects, which is why digital is truly a blessing.  I used up rolls of 35mm film years ago and it was quite expensive.  I was playing with my macro lenses and want to share some of the over 100 shots I took this morning.

I couldn’t stop!  Blueberries produce such fascinating hues and muffins are so textured!  Enjoy my blueberry muffin art and try not to get hungry.  There is a recipe at the bottom in case you want to try these.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Still Blurry

As stated in my previous post, the last number of years have all been a blur.

I have never been so disorganized and out of touch and this is such a bad time to be this way.  I am now in the process of cleaning everything out and packing as I go along, expecting to be moving before the end of the year.  Certainly before winter sets in again.

I wanted to share some of the projects I have been working on sporadically since sometime last year as well as other odds and ends.  This blog may be a blur as well.

I have been working on multiple projects on canvas with various mediums, sewing with fabrics, actually made some bead jewelry with supplies purchased years ago and tried my hand with polymer clay.

Click on thumbnails for full size.

The following are various sewing projects.

1980’s silk pants being upcycled to scarf. Love the images on them!

Very pleased with my second attempt at polymer clay jewelry! This was after I burnt a batch in an old toaster oven with messed up thermostat.

A couple of craft type projects.

Not going to miss the frost on my windows, no matter how beautiful it is.

I’m going to end this blur of a post with a question.

What color is this dress?

Frankenfoods And You

FDABiteMe

I was upset but not surprised to find out that the FDA has OK’d the use of genetically modified foods.  Our American government has not been very kind to its citizens in all respects so why would they care about our health?  Most of you are aware by now that President Obama recently signed a bill protecting Monsanto.  The fact that he even bothered to do this proves that he feels this company is in need of protection for its dangerous practices.  Most of our very large corporations, such as Monsanto, are very large contributors to our politicians campaign funds which are much-needed if they wish to stay in office or get there in the first place.

I don’t believe that anyone’s life and health should be controlled by forces that are not for us.  I don’t believe that just because someone has the money they should be able to run the show, but we all know this is exactly what happens.  The fact that those in our government no longer represent the people, should tell you that voting does not help anything, especially when choosing between two evils.  Since large contributions are needed by our candidates it encourages types that are willing to sell out to run.  That being said, we the people have always had the power to speak up and to make needed changes if enough of us care or our voice is loud enough.

Even if you don’t risk immediate death when eating this produce, there is no proof as to the long-term health risks eating this food may cause.  They are not natural and genetic engineering is very different from cross pollinating and grafting to get better results in various plants and flowers.  With genetic engineering, they can inject animal DNA into our fruits or vegetables making them no longer vegan acceptable.  This results in ethical as well as health dangers and these questions need to be answered before something like this can be allowed no matter who’s getting rich off the proceeds.  They will also be able to use this genetic modification on animals with heaven knows what results.

Our government is going by what the scientists choose to tell them.  Problem is these scientists are all paid for by those with vested interest that they be allowed to do this.  We need some independent research done as well as time to see just how dangerous this is or if it’s even worth all the trouble to do these modifications.  How many of you now purchase fruits of all kind that are unnaturally hard and rot when you leave them out in attempt to ripen?  This happens to me all the time and the flavor is horrible compared to a real vine ripened organic tomato or even a fresh apple.  If for only the fact that our food no longer tastes the way it should, leave our food alone!

Don’t mess with it genetically, stop putting poisons inside and out and maybe we will have far less food allergies and auto-immune problems.  I’m a firm believer that our daily ingested toxins are why so many have cancers, allergies and auto-immune disorders that can’t be explained any other way.

Please do this.  Write your representatives and write the president‘s office telling them that you are not happy with the FDA’s recent decision as well as the President signing of the “Monsanto Protection Act” that was written up by a Monsanto sponsored senator.  And this was after receiving a petition asking him to veto this bill with over a quarter of a million signatures.  That’s inexcusable!

Daily Prompt: 32 Flavors and Then Some!

Just found these delicious Breyers Gelato flavors, Tiramisu and Triple Chocolate.  I just used to pass these by in the freezer section purchasing Moose Tracks Ice Cream untill my grocery store had them on sale one week.  Soooo glad I did decide to try them because I can really understand their new commercial now.
