Sometimes mildly bi-polar is not so bad. I’ve never been officially diagnosed as such but it runs in my family and my Doctor recently told me that it’s possible I may be “mildly” bi-polar because I’m a creative type and very sensitive. I’ve always been able to function normally, sort of, so this comment did not surprise me in any way. Not sure why all the labels they insist on giving everyone, but on to the challenge and that is I made blueberry muffins early this morning. Someone gave me a whole slew of frozen blueberries last week and I’m not going to let the go to waste! Besides, I have to make way in the freezer for ice cream cause summer’s comin’ fast! Thank God!
Sometimes it appears I become obsessive when taking photographs of various subjects, which is why digital is truly a blessing. I used up rolls of 35mm film years ago and it was quite expensive. I was playing with my macro lenses and want to share some of the over 100 shots I took this morning.
I couldn’t stop! Blueberries produce such fascinating hues and muffins are so textured! Enjoy my blueberry muffin art and try not to get hungry. There is a recipe at the bottom in case you want to try these.
I was upset but not surprised to find out that the FDA has OK’d the use of genetically modified foods. Our American government has not been very kind to its citizens in all respects so why would they care about our health? Most of you are aware by now that President Obama recently signed a bill protecting Monsanto. The fact that he even bothered to do this proves that he feels this company is in need of protection for its dangerous practices. Most of our very large corporations, such as Monsanto, are very large contributors to our politicians campaign funds which are much-needed if they wish to stay in office or get there in the first place.
I don’t believe that anyone’s life and health should be controlled by forces that are not for us. I don’t believe that just because someone has the money they should be able to run the show, but we all know this is exactly what happens. The fact that those in our government no longer represent the people, should tell you that voting does not help anything, especially when choosing between two evils. Since large contributions are needed by our candidates it encourages types that are willing to sell out to run. That being said, we the people have always had the power to speak up and to make needed changes if enough of us care or our voice is loud enough.
Even if you don’t risk immediate death when eating this produce, there is no proof as to the long-term health risks eating this food may cause. They are not natural and genetic engineering is very different from cross pollinating and grafting to get better results in various plants and flowers. With genetic engineering, they can inject animal DNA into our fruits or vegetables making them no longer vegan acceptable. This results in ethical as well as health dangers and these questions need to be answered before something like this can be allowed no matter who’s getting rich off the proceeds. They will also be able to use this genetic modification on animals with heaven knows what results.
Our government is going by what the scientists choose to tell them. Problem is these scientists are all paid for by those with vested interest that they be allowed to do this. We need some independent research done as well as time to see just how dangerous this is or if it’s even worth all the trouble to do these modifications. How many of you now purchase fruits of all kind that are unnaturally hard and rot when you leave them out in attempt to ripen? This happens to me all the time and the flavor is horrible compared to a real vine ripened organic tomato or even a fresh apple. If for only the fact that our food no longer tastes the way it should, leave our food alone!
Please do this. Write your representatives and write the president‘s office telling them that you are not happy with the FDA’s recent decision as well as the President signing of the “Monsanto Protection Act” that was written up by a Monsanto sponsored senator. And this was after receiving a petition asking him to veto this bill with over a quarter of a million signatures. That’s inexcusable!
Just found these delicious Breyers Gelato flavors, Tiramisu and Triple Chocolate. I just used to pass these by in the freezer section purchasing Moose Tracks Ice Cream untill my grocery store had them on sale one week. Soooo glad I did decide to try them because I can really understand their new commercial now.
Sorry that I have been so lazy about posting anything of substance for a while now. The very reason for this blog was to share things I have learned living on the cheap all of my life.
Christmas was great this year, had some family and friends over for Christmas Eve this year and went to one of my son’s homes on Christmas Day for “Dinner with the Cratchits” complete with plum pudding from England and some kind of “Hot Gin Punch a la Cratchit” which I blame for the enormous group hug before I left for the night. I didn’t try any but brought some with me to try when I got home. I never drink and drive.

I lost one of my cousins a few days before Christmas this year. I am posting a picture with her from Christmas of 1957.

Some of my family now live in the Upper Peninsula. My cousin Thelma passed this year after suffering for many years with Alzheimer’s and my sister Gail passed right after Christmas last year from esophageal cancer. Christmas 1957 was the last Christmas for my Aunt Ruth who passed approximately six months later from Colon Cancer. Moral: Enjoy every Christmas like it’s your last.
I saw this idea at a diner in Marshall Mi before the holidays. They had placed a loved ones picture in one of the wreaths to honor them and so I placed a picture of my sister to honor her because she always loved Christmas so much and this was our first Christmas without her.

Wanted to add more to the usual lights and garland I place in my flower boxes each year so I found these gift boxes at the dollar store and inserted some wire to attach them. The soil was not yet frozen, so this was possible. The following is a little walk through of what I did to achieve this:
Finally broke down and made a Santa doll with the pattern I purchased many years ago. Also used some of my odds & ends to make some “baby” crafts.
I will not post actual pictures of the parties out of respect for others privacy. A few shots of some of the cookies that I and others made this year. One of my sons went all out this year and for the first time made cookies. All kinds of them. I think the Ninja sugar cookies got him started, but we really loved the melt in your mouth eggnog cookies! I have to say I have eaten so many of these I have actually felt very sick so that’s it for me.
1/2 C Butter
3/4 C Dark Brown Sugar
1 Egg
1/2 tsp Vanilla
Sift together following dry ingredients:
1 3/4 C Whole Wheat Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Cardamom
1/4 tsp Cloves
1/4 tsp Nutmeg
1/4 tsp Ginger
Add:
1 C Applesauce
1/2 to 1 C Raisins, Currents & or Craisins
1 C Chopped Nuts if desired
Slowly cream together the first four ingredients, then add the dry ingredients till well combined. Incorporate the apple sauce and remaining ingredients into the batter and bake in a greased bundt or tube pan at 350° for 45-50 minutes. Please feel free to adjust the spices as well as adding any of the fruit. You could try chopped plums, apples or leave the fruit and nuts out altogether and it will still be delicious!
I have eaten healthy most of my life. Thankfully they did not have fast food when I was young and we were too poor to over indulge in anything, thank God!

Love the local farmers market at harvest time!
Had to start sticking to a very low sodium diet lately in hopes of keeping my blood pressure at a more normal level. I’m so jealous of people who can eat anything and they’re fine. That’s amazing to me. I recently decided to change-up the usual pasta and sauce by baking it. Used an odd larger pasta called Gigli, made my own sauce with a tomato paste base and very low salt, mostly herbs and spices and layered it with some cheese I mixed up with low-fat sour cream, which is naturally low in sodium compared to cheese. Made for a nice creamy base. Recipe to come later on the Recipe page I’m working on.

My super guilty pleasure is Moose Tracks Ice Cream and lots of it!
Didn’t used to matter that much when I was younger and ate super healthy all the time and this was about the only fat and sugar in my diet.
I’m trying to cut down to allow for some of the other unhealthy food I now eat and the other day I picked up some natural vanilla ice cream by Breyers instead of my usual.
I had previously purchased some Dove candies that were on sale so I decided to forgo the usual fudge and peanut butter cups that are in Moose Tracks.
Then I got the bright idea to melt some of the dark chocolate candies in some butter and cream for a fudge sauce and split some of the peanut butter candies and throw them into my vanilla ice cream to see if it was close to the real thing.
