Po’ Girl Shines Little Bits

A little piece of Calumet Michigan, wishing I was there! Love the Upper Peninsula!
Just a goof-off statement about pollution, that is a very serious matter!

Still missing my little baby Raizen, waiting for me to come home after work.

Can’t believe it is already September, and 2012 yet!  Didn’t even bother to buy any 2013 Calendars, how about you all?

Was featured again on Instructables.   I plan on having much more information on that site in the near future.  Food, sewing and crafts.  My latest featured was Drawstring purse with cubbies inside to put things in.  Again this step by step “how-to” can be found on instructables.com.  Hope to have more info soon on Po’ Girl hand made clothing and will let you know when the etsy store opens!

Coming soon to a forest or woods near you!

Crafted a fabric bowl with yarn and button trim years ago. Love throwing my jewelry into it after a hard day, then I can hang them back up where they belong When I have more time.

Poetry Inside of Me

I have been writing poetry since I was a child.  I think that this is why I love songs so much.  The best of both worlds.  Poetry and music!  I have always wanted to record some of my music, or maybe get someone else to record it.  As well I do have to get a poetry book out, for the heck of it.  Some days I get up and it just comes pouring out of me.  I am a natural writer, and do write a lot.  I can’t figure why I procrastinate when it comes to any of my blogs.  This one just squirted out so I decided to post it right away.  I used to be paranoid about someone stealing my ideas even though I know the artist automatically retains the rights to his creations.  Now with these blogs, it automatically puts the date of when you publish your work publicly so as to remove any doubt of who the original creator is should someone try to take a song or poem that you wrote.  I used to send everything to the be copyrighted and that got expensive.

GET IT

We are here:
to live & learn, to laugh & cry
to love & hate to suffer & die.
Our life, of course, is not a test
to see if we can be the best.
But gives our God the way to heal
to hug someone, to make a meal.
We’re who we are, I don’t know why
that some are mean and other’s shy.
Make no mistake, that person’s nod
is really from the living God.
So any cruelty on a whim
is being done direct to Him.

Mouse Finger Puppets For a Rainy Day!

You can look up mouse finger puppets on the instructables.com website for further instructions.  I made these years ago when my children were young.  Found one packed away and thought to put the instructions online so others could enjoy it with their kids.  Meanwhile enjoy the lame puppet show (warning, contains graphic subject matter of one of the mouse puppets losing an eye in battle!).

2012 Ann Arbor Art Fair

Please enjoy the slide show from the 2012 Ann Arbor Art Fair I attended 07/20/2012.  I included my lunch as well as the best wall art I have ever experienced, so far!

I have not included any actual art out of respect for the artists copyright.

Peace, Love, Hope Garden Cap Instructables Entry

I submitted an entry for Instructables Fashion contest.  The first prize was a sewing machine that also embroiders.  Didn’t win but at least I tried!

I have put together some photos in a slideshow to kind of walk you through how to make the hat from a pair of old jeans.  I created a pattern from an old cap I still had, took it apart and made the templates from parchment paper and lined it with tea stained muslin.  The jean fabric was rather heavy so the cap is too warm to wear in the sun on a warm day.  I would recommend that you try the same thing with a cotton broadcloth or poplin and leave it unlined.  I went kinda krazy decorating it, but you can just leave it plain or use any fabric of your choice.  Please feel free to check out the patterns as I have written the size of the templates on the pattern so you can copy them to use.

Acrylic Painting Save

Pulled out one of my old acrylic paintings from years ago that I was never happy with.  I don’t normally do impressionism or anything loose.  It was very blah streaks of autumn shades.  I went over it with some metallics and like it much better now.  The base was flat and mixed with some thickened Gesso for added texture.  The metallic was stippled on some areas on top of this texture.

Po’ Girl’s Lazy Upcycled Jacket

Occasionally I shop the clearance sales at Kohl’s to see what I can find.  I have specific pieces in mind,

Clearance price tag

but am ready for anything, as long as it is a super bargain.  I may not be a girl any more, but I am po’.

I recently came across a really nice jean jacket with faux fur collar that was almost a steal.  I purchased the jacket, regularly priced at $58.00, for $11.60 then used a 30% off coupon which knocked it down to $8.12.  That is an awesome price!

Check out the price tag.  I always wait until I have a 20 or 30% off coupon before clearance shopping.  They offer a lot of 15% off coupons during the year, but I always wait til I can get big money off.

Everyone needs at least one jean jacket in their wardrobe.  They go with so many pieces that you can’t go wrong wearing them with just about anything!  I decided that this jacket needed just a little something extra so I hand painted an eagle on the back.  It was not laborious.  I had sketched one many years ago and used it as the pattern.  Did not take long and only used 3 colors.  Black, white and gold fabric paint.  I was going to add feathers to the front, but thought against it for the time being.

Now, viola!  I have a one of a kind jacket, that I may decide to wear, sell or give as a gift that was not expensive and did not take long at all to “upcycle!”  I was not able to do this with some other jackets simply because they were center seamed.  The center panel on this style allowed enough unbroken space for the image.

Building a Trellis From a Felled Tree

A couple of years ago there was a windstorm and I woke to a crashing sound about 5:00 am.  I thought something fell on my house so I looked out the front window and the large oak tree was still standing.  I went back to my room to look in the yard and my initial view were branches and leaves pressed to the window.  I threw on some clothes and ran outside to better view the damage, though completely dark with my outside light being damaged as well.  The first thing I noticed was my rather large mock cherry tree was completely split down the middle.  The initial planters of the tree had not properly pruned it when it was young and it was all gnarled at the crotch of the tree and did not allow proper aeration.  The tree had appeared very healthy in all respects, but the split clearly showed that it had been rotting for sometime in that area.

Tree Split

What caught my eye was the fact that a number of the tree branches were resting on the power lines going to my 1942 bungalow, phone as well as electric.  I got out my electric chainsaw and was praying the entire time I was cutting the branches off myself.  Everyone was out of town during this time.  I did not try to disturb my neighbors.  I figured if any of them heard my chain saw at about 5:30am and wanted to help me, they were welcome.  None ever showed up.  After I had cut off most of the branches that were resting on the power lines, I was able to see underneath to find a large limb was resting on my deck rail, which prevented the entire weight of the tree to actually knock out my power lines!  I was thanking God like mad for his blessing and help in that it could have been much worse.  Starting with the fact that the only chain saw I had was electric.  Had the power lines been knocked down, I would have just had to call the electric company and let them do all the work.  At least I found out the hard way what I was capable of.  Once everthing was felled and neatened up, I slowly cut all the branches so that I would be able to use most of the wood later.  Nothing was really wasted.  My neighbors look some of the larger pieces of the trunk and the kindling for fireplaces and firepits.  I kept various sizes of the cleaned off branches to use as trellises and fences later.  I have two trellises done at this time and will be making more if I did not spread myself so thin at this time looking for another home I can buy for cash cheap, looking for another job, working on my clothing and jewelry I want to get on etsy.com asap, getting ready for various art shows and fixing up my current home to make it “renter ready.” The following are pictures of the finished trellises made from the branches of that felled tree.  I have also included a short video.  After I layed the various branches to shape and size, I had to verify that the branches also touched one another in the correct places so they could be properly drilled and the screws would hold.  I actually started using my old screws used with Hardibacker, backerboard with I installed ceramic tile around the tub.  They are #10 x 1  1/4.”  I need to get some 1 1/2″ for the thicker branches.  It’s not difficult.  Anyone can do pretty much anything they put their mind to.  If it doesn’t work, then try another way until it does work for you.  You may want to tie the joints together with natural hemp twine either in place of the screws or after screwing together for added strength.  Screws keep the branches in place much better then just twine.

Getting fancier each attempt!
                Work in progress.

Fancier still, I painted one of the trellises with Lumiere Paints.

Po Girl Shines at last! Sorta

Finally got my website up, pogirlshines.com.  Once posted my links are not working at all on the link page.  Also, my contact page sends the email to me, but the message area is blank.  Got to pay for the upgrade for this blog though.  It is frustrating to not have any options of fonts, or anything much.

These are two cuff bracelets made from actual cuffs that were cut off of two pairs of Jeans that were too long.  Just added yarn, ribbon, sequins, charms and beads to see what they would look like.  They are my first attempt in using leftover scraps and making a cuff bracelet.  Not too disappointed.
